Astragalus membranaceus is the foundation, carrying astragaloside IV, cycloastragenol and formononetin — the saponin and isoflavone chemistry of the root that the tonic tradition treats as the guardian of the body's outer defensive layer. Ganoderma lucidum contributes the ganoderic acid family, the triterpenoids that distinguish a dual-extracted reishi from a merely powdered one, and that underlie its standing as the great immune-modulating mushroom of the pharmacopoeia.

Cordyceps militaris adds cordycepin and adenosine, the energy-and-oxygen layer, since a defensive system is metabolically expensive and runs on the same reserve the training does.
